About Spook Hill Wines

Our Story

Spook Hill Wines are produced at Cadell in South Australia's Riverland, which is situated 2 hours drive north-east of Adelaide. The Cadell Valley is a former oxbow of the Murray River now bypassed by the current river channel. Silt deposited in this ancient river valley contributes to the unique terroir of the area.

The Spook Hill Vineyard has provided the fruit for Silent Partner Shiraz since the 1999 vintage. In that time our wines have achieved six amateur medals including ‘Wine of The Show’ and now three commercial wineshow medals for Silent Partner Shiraz.

Vigneron and winemaker, Jock Gordon produces Silent Partner Shiraz from grapes grown on his vineyard situated at the foot of “Spook Hill” in the Cadell Valley.

Spook Hill is home to the local cemetery. Evidence of a time when the sea extended far inland can be seen upon Spook Hill with fossilized oyster shells in abundance.

The Spook Hill Vineyard is comprised of vines dating back to 1969 planted by Jock Gordon senior. Wine grape production in the local area commenced in the 1920’s. At that time Mack Gordon planted Shiraz on his Cadell Riverland property after taking up land in the Soldier Settlement Scheme following WW1.

Silent Partner is produced with carefully selected fruit, gentle handling throughout the winemaking process and maturation in aged American Oak barrels until the ideal balance is achieved. Bottle age prior to release ensures this wine is ready to enjoy now whilst rewarding those who wish to cellar it.

We take pride in producing a soft, approachable wine with plenty of character. Fruit dominates the palate with a harmonious oak influence and a lingering finish.
